Wind turbines harness the wind to generate electricity. Research has found that renewable energy, including wind, could reduce the UK’s dependence on imported fossil fuels which, in turn, could protect UK consumers from the volatile and rapidly rising cost of fossil fuels. The electricity generated by wind could replace electricity generated from conventional power stations, reducing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Power generation from low carbon sources has therefore become increasingly important in light of the consensus on man-made climate change. To reflect these priorities, the Scottish Government has set targets that seek to meet 100% of Scotland’s electricity demand from renewable sources by 2020.
